Dining at the.twenty.canvan with the Entertainer App

9/14/2017

About 5 minutes walk away from Lavender MRT Station, you can find your way to The.twenty.cavan, which is a modern cuisine restaurant, owned by Andrew and Alex whom are both professional chefs. Their food are infused with strong Chinese influences and offers a twist to the otherwise traditional Chinese dishes which is often prepared by your grand parents.

Their rustic, industrial dining area is their way to acknowledge Jalan Besar’s association with lighting shops as you can see from their beautiful light bulbs decors hanging around the restaurant.

Take a look at the ambience in there and you'll fall in love with it.

We were first served with their Garden Green Salad with pan-fried prawns, cashew nuts, fresh berries and green chili dressing ($12) which was a refreshing dish that was quickly wiped out by the table. The rocket greens were well complimented with the mixture of fruits and nuts which makes this a healthy starter into the night.

Next up, we had the Mushroom Skewers which comprises peppercorn-flavoured Portobello and Shiitake mushrooms ($8), Deep-fried Soft Shell Crab with curry chicken floss ($9) and Quad Seafood ($12) which comprises top shell, scallop, prawn, baby octopus tossed with mint hot bean sauce served with jellyfish. A choice of three starters will cost you about $21 and four starters cost you about $26. This is in my opinion a good platter to share with a gang of friends. My favourite two goes to the soft shell crab and quad seafood for seafood lovers. The mushroom skewers were also delectable and bursting with their juices when placed in my mouth.

Moving on to the mains, the Red Rice Braised Pork Ribs with roasted vegetables ($20) is Chef Andrew's interpretation of the popular Hakka chicken dish made with red glutinous rice wine. The sauce was delicious even though I am personally not a fan of the red glutinous rice wine. They can be easily ripped out of their bones when cooked to perfection, also coupled with the roasted vegetables, they were heavenly. I have a soft spot for ribs by the way so it made it to one of my favourites for the evening.

If ribs are not your thing, try the Cavan Breakfast of brioche, bacon, pork bratwurst, sautéed button mushrooms, corn kernels and choice of eggs ($18). This is served all day and I think they make a great brunch or supper idea. Most of us loved the pork bratwurst and the corn kernels. The bread was surprisingly tasty when eaten on its own too.

Crispy Fish & Chips ($17). Tilapia coated with lager batter and fries with the skin on was unfortunately not appealing for me because the crust batter was too thick. I would prefer something thinner. The fries on the side however was very good.

Canton Roast Chicken with homemade Thai chili sauce and black rice ($18) was a very successful and well-liked dish that made it to almost everyone's favourite that evening. The black rice was however, quite tasteless when eaten on its own. We loved every bits of the chicken skin on this. Highly recommended dish.

Chicken Galangal Rice Bowl ($18). This dish had diced chicken tossed with rice in blue ginger sauce with zucchini, tomatoes and edamame. Guess what, everyone thought those were fish or meat floss but none could identify that it was blue ginger. We loved every shred and pieces of those, and the chicken was very nicely done too. This dish is worthy of your every penny.

Stir-fried Blueberry Lamb Chop with cous cous ($20). This is a chef specialty that you should order when you are there. The cous cous had a very interesting flavour and the Lamb Chop tasted somewhat like the local sweet and sour pork in berries sauce.

For desserts, take your pick from the Pumpkin Yam Puree with chilled coconut cream ($8) which is a modern version of the traditional Teochew orh nee which has aloe vera and pandan juice mixed in with the pumpkin and yam puree. This is so good that it melts in your mouth.

Or the Matcha Pudding with mixed berries, black sesame cream and a dollop of pulut hitam ($7). I love the pulut hitam on this.

Also try the Lemon Pudding ($7) which has a hint of mango to balance out the tartness of fresh lemon juice. Something zesty to end your meal is always nice.

For drinks, the.twenty.canvan offers four house wines – two red (both from France) and two white (one from New Zealand and the other from France). The Ferraud & Fils’ pinot noir and chardonnay are sold by the glass ($20++) while the other two, the Sileni sauvignon blanc (France) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild cabernet sauvignon (NZ) are sold by the bottle ($80++).

If you are not an alcoholic, the House Sodas ($8 each) will be suitable for you. Some of those includes the Peach Lemonade, Blueberry Lemonade, and Lemon & Ginger and Spicy Mango. They are available upon ordering.

They also have Corona Extra, a Mexican beer; and Japanese beer - three types of Asahi (Black, Premium and Dry) ($12 each); two flavours of Hitachino Nest craft beer (Yuzu and Red Rice Ale) ($16 each).
