Barashi Tei - Satisfy your Japanese Food cravings
9/23/2017
Hi, I am back at Barashi Tei, to sample their new menu! If you found this name familiar, it is because I was there sometime last year to sample their dishes. Read my previous post to find out about their old menu and learn more about Mr Wang, founder and owner of this Japanese eatery.
If you are looking for good authentic Japanese food to fill your tummies for lunch or finding the perfect chill out place to dine and hangout into the late nights, this is the place you may wish to check out. Its prices are pocket-friendly , so you don't have to worry about your pockets being burnt when dining here.
For starters, I ordered my favorite Hot Yuzu drink, to clear my throat as the recent weather had been quite bad. I strongly recommended this to the table and soon after everyone was raving about the drink. Light, tangy and good for those who are having cough or sore throat.
Are you looking for Don?
"Don is short for Donburi, which is a Japanese Rice Bowl which consist of fish, meat or vegetables and are usually served over rice."
As you guys probably know by now that I am never a beef lover, this Wagyu Beef Don $38.80 however, is here to steal the lime light. The beef slices literally melt in my mouth and they do not feel grainy at all. They go along well with the rice and makes us go for second helpings.
Oh well, if you are really not a beef lover, try the Chirashi don $26.80 which consist of super thick slices of assorted fish which feels healthier and gives you a similar type of satisfaction. Guilt-Free! Salmon are good sources of Fish omega 3- fatty acids which are supposed to be good for your heart.
How can you not eat salmon when you dine in a Japanese restaurant?
Salmon lovers, do not miss out on the Spicy Salmon Maki $14.80. These are bite sized and as its name suggest they are slightly spicy, but crispy and worth checking out.
If you are not a fan of spicy food, go for the Unagi Salmon Mentai Maki $14.80 which is a similar version with Unagi and without the spiciness. These Makis are so good you'll regret not ordering them.
Looking for something to go along with your Japanese Sake or beer?
How about Foie Gras?
"Foie gras is a luxury food product made of the liver of a duck or goose that has been specially fattened."
How about trying something different? The Foie Gras Sushi $15.80 (2 pieces) is here to satisfy curious dinners. As Foie Gras has a unique taste to it, not many can accept its taste. This is one generous helping, almost the size of a luncheon meat. It does look like one from a distance.
If you are looking for finger food to go with your Japanese Sake as a mid-night snack, do consider the huge chunks of Beef Skewers which are similar to our local Satay meat skewers.
Ika Teriyaki (Grilled Squid with Teriyaki Sauce) $16.80 is old love, it came with some jellyfish appetizer this round and I love how they slice this into bite size pieces. They go along well with the teriyaki sauce to give you a smooth bite. Not chewy at all i promise.
Or the Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab $12.80 for those who would prefer something less meaty.
Love for Tamago?
"Tamago is a type of Japanese omelette, which is made by rolling together several layers of cooked egg. These are usually prepared in a rectangular omelette pan called a makiyakinabe."
If you want something egg-citing, try the highly raved Tamago Yaki $5 which are soft and melts in your mouth.
Or the different Chawanmushi (steam egg) $4.80 - $9.80. If you prefer the plain and simple, go for the Chawanmushi, for those who enjoys some popping action in the mouth, go for the Salmon Roe Chawanmushi, or if you have an acquired taste bud, you'll enjoy the Uni Chawanmushi which has a dollop of sea Urchin on them.
When you are Stressed, Eat Desserts.
"Stressed is desserts spelled backwards."
Order a bowl of Gelato (Mango, Matcha, Pistachio, Black Sesame, Avacado, Yuzu) $4.80 - $5.80 single scoop) to cleanse your palette and end your meal on a sweet note.
Overall Thoughts:
Ambience Rating: ★★★★☆
I love the Japanese feel of the restaurant. The seats are comfortably spaced.
Service: ★★★★☆
Food are served promptly and our table was cleared without us having to call the waiter/waitress.
Price of Food: ★★★☆☆
There seem to be an increase in the price of the food although they are still generally pocket-friendly. They are more affordable than the regular Japanese Restaurant around the same area. You can check out their set lunches and their promotion from time to time.
Taste of Food: ★★★☆☆
Raw food are quite fresh and service size are reasonable. In general i love their makis, grilled food and food on skewers more than the rest of their offering.
Location: ★★★☆☆
Alight from Dhoby Ghaut MRT and exit towards The Cathy. About 10 minutes walk and you should be able to find the place along with a row of eateries.
Worth a re-visit: ★★★★☆
I would gladly come back for their meat skewers, Tamago and makis.
