Your list of 7 essential items on-the-go, to fight the COVID-19 Virus

3/19/2020

Who would have thought that we would be discussing this topic right now? Yes, the world is badly hit by the horrifying COVID-19 virus, because there is no cure for it yet. This virus had also claimed the lives of many and caused some countries to go into a lock down. Perhaps, it was also after the outbreak of such a virus that made us realize that we haven't been really looking into our personal hygiene.

Did you realize that you now tend to wash your hands with soap more frequently? More of us are also carrying hand sanitizer, anti-bacteria wet tissues, face mask and disinfectant in our hand bags, compared to a year ago. Hygiene products are literally flying off the shelves, so are surgical face mask and disinfectants.

I was struggling to get my own surgical mask supplies as well (not because of the COVID-19 virus), but because I have sinus issues, and need to put on the surgical mask during my work. What I had used to take for granted, which used to be lying on the shelves of our local drugstores, waiting for me to purchase, had over the course of a mere few months time, became a national scarcity. A product that millions of people worldwide are searching for.

No doubt keeping these essential items at home or making use of them on the go, would not guarantee that we would be free of, or spared from the Convid-19 virus. They had now became a necessity for care and prevention and they should be included in your personal hygiene care pack.

#1: Thermometer
As advised by the health authorities, we are encouraged to take our temperature daily and if we have a fever, we should visit the Doctor immediately and stay at home to rest until we recover.

I recommend  Omron pencil thermometer with °C and °F, although you are free to get it in any other brands you like. Omron is a trusty brand and we happened to have a blood pressure monitor in the same brand at home. Get one that you can replace it's battery and get a reliable one so that you don't have to keep replacing your thermometer. Do remember to wash them well before and after every use.

#2: Anti-bacteria Hand Wash/Soap (Alternative Hand Sanitizer spray/lotion)

We are advised to practice self hygiene by washing our hands more frequently, especially after we touch unknown surfaces, as anti-bacteria hand wash kills off all germs/virus effectively. If unable, we can use a liquid hand sanitizer.

An alternative solution is to use a hand sanitizer spray which contains at least 70% alcohol content, if it is not convenient for you to wash your hand. Such as when you are outdoors, travelling to different areas or working.

Sterile-X HX Anti Virus and Bacteria hand sanitizer spray is made in Singapore. This hand sanitizer spray makes a good choice, because it contains 70% alcohol which is effective against the virus. It has a pleasant lavender fragrance and contains skin-friendly ingredients such as extract of the aloe vera, suitable for daily use on the elderly and children. The 120ml bottle is easy to carry around and fit most hand bags. One disadvantage is that this particular spray head doesn't dispense the spray smoothly, I find slight difficulty with dispensing.

#3: Disinfectant Liquids /Antiseptic Disinfectant Spray

As water alone cannot effectively eliminate germs and viruses. You are also encouraged to use disinfectant liquids to clean your home and work areas.

I find an antiseptic disinfectant spray easier to use, as it is generally safer. You can also use it directly on multiple surfaces such as on your shoes, door knobs, door handles etc. as compared to a liquid disinfectant, which requires more work as you will need to dilute it in water.

Sterile-X X70 Anti Virus and Bacteria Surface Sanitizer 70% alcohol is easy to use and great for most surfaces. It is quick drying and has a refreshing peppermint scent. This product is also made in Singapore. It uses the same type of spray head as the Sterile-X HX sanitizer spray and doesn't dispense easily.

#4: Surgical Face Mask (Optional)

I do not encourage the hoarding of mask. However, there are many views for this particular item, I choose to have it in my care pack for obvious reasons. I have sinus issues. I do need to put on my surgical face mask when I am working. I also encourage the wearing of face mask when you feel unwell, have cough or colds as you will not want to spread your germs around.

However, if you are feeling fine. You may not need to wear them. Just be more on the ball with your hygiene.

#5: Vitamin C, Multivitamin tablets/Immunity Boosters (Optional but good to have)

For obvious reasons, I do stock up supplies of my vitamin tablets. You can only fight a virus when you are well. Don't wait until you fall ill before you start on these. If you don't eat vitamins to fight a virus, you'll end up having to eat medicine to fight the virus when it attacks you. Build up your immunity when you are well, and start when you are young.

#6: Medications

While #5 keeps you healthy and prevent you from getting a virus, I do encourage you to stock up essential medications for general illnesses such as headaches, diarrhea, cough, flu & colds. Some of us may also have chronic illnesses so keeping our own medicinal supplies is a no-brainer.

#7 Manuka Honey/High quality honey (Optional but good to have)
At this point, you might be wondering why I've added Manuka Honey (Read this article for more insights to the world of Manuka Honey) into my list of essential items. I take honey on a daily basis as a form of supplement as they have cured me of my chronic cough. They are also good immunity boosters for our cold, cough, sore throats and makes a natural remedy! I feel that these are critical during the COVID-19 virus times.

You can take honey by itself, mixed with water as a honey drink, or use it as a spread on your bread or pancakes. Honey can also be used as a sugar substitute and is great on teas. I've tried this particular Pure Origin's leatherword honey on it's own and diluted in the water. It is not arificially sweet, it is highly palatable.
